The centre opened its doors to our first clients in 2000 and since then has housed over 150 start-ups, many of which have developed into successful businesses, bringing employment and sustainability to the local area. BEaT is overseen by a voluntary Board of Directors, whose members are drawn from the Local Enterprise Board, Fingal County Council, prominent local businesses, community representatives, Solas and the local Credit Union. Each director gives their invaluable time and experience to help create a sustainable enterprise centre that promotes and encourages new and exciting ventures.
The BEaT Centre has been a fantastic start up for our business. Setting up a business can be very daunting but The BEaT Centre eased all our worries and helped us in deciding to take the plunge and we haven’t looked back since. It’s just over a year now and business is thriving, the support and advice we received from the staff in the Centre is second to none and knowing they’re always available too is a great relief. Thank you and keep up the good work!
Marc and Emer Hynes – Java the Hut Roastery
Towards the end of the 20th century, Balbriggan was hit by high unemployment. The textile industry floundered and government policies resulted in a downturn in the fishing trade. The depressed local economy lead to a community heavily reliant on social welfare. In the early 1990s, a group of volunteers decided enough was enough. Lead by Robert Beggs, the Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce was formed to promote and develop our town; from the Chamber, a sub group called Balbriggan Enterprise Development Group (BEDG) was formed. Their remit? To explore the development of an enterprise centre in Balbriggan, where start-up businesses could be encouraged to grow.
